It feels like an alien is about to pop out of your guts. You think I’m exaggerating? You have no idea.
Before I get to that, I want to clear my tabs in this last post of the year. First, you should read Bob Herbert’s op-ed about the Senate’s plan to fund health care by [...]

Last night I got around to watching this week’s House, MD – the link and the rest of this post contain spoilers, so be warned.
House is one of my favorite shows, maybe my favorite. I know some real docs – eg Kevin, MD – have problems with the show, but I know better than to [...]

As a complement to yesterday’s post, and perhaps a bit of counterpoint, let me recommend a movie called Music Within. I caught the first half of it this morning, which reminded me to write about it.
The film is based on the life story of Richard Pimentel, a talented public speaker who was deafened by injuries [...]

Once during a lengthy hospital stay, I woke from a narcotic-induced nap to the sound of plucked harp strings wafting in from the hallway. I am sure it was intended to be comforting. To my groggy ears, it was like the soundtrack to the sort of reception held in bank lobbies.
It turns out this is [...]

I threw a link to the White Zombie song “More Human than Human” (NSFW) into the PFAM last week, but it wasn’t entirely frivolous. There’s a bit of a story there.
I didn’t like the song when it came out – less than a year after I got sick. It was too loud, too overplayed, and [...]

Tomorrow I head to DC for the Health Care for America Now! rally, and you won’t guess who’s coming: Edie Falco, a/k/a Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. HCAN has been running YouTube ads with Ms. Falco, inviting people to attend the rally. Apparently, minor celebs sometimes have difficulty getting health insurance. Who knew?
I suppose this kind of [...]

For the sick person in your life, a couple last minute gift ideas:
The Hypochondriac’s Guide to Life. and Death. by Gene Weingarten. This is probably the funniest book on illness I have ever read (though there aren’t that many funny books about illness to begin with). As cheap as it is, it’s worth it for [...]

Another poem from Ramon Sampedro:
Your breasts are roses whose aroma I inhale.
Waves, white foam rocking (with?) my kisses.
Rumors of seashells whisper in my ear
the eternal affirmation which keeps awake the mystery.
Meanwhile my lips fly
wishing for a perch on your warm heart
as a butterfly desires the sweet of the flower.
Meanwhile your passion-lit being (???) cries out
‘I [...]

In a discussion on another blog, about one of my posts here, a commenter suggested I was the sort of person who watches too much Gray’s Anatomy. As a matter of fact, I don’t – not willingly, anyway. I share a television with someone who watches it occasionally, but I try to find other things [...]
