Thanks Duncan. I believe your comments about paternalism are fair.

Apologies, Dr. Grumet. The title of the post was what caught my eye, and set my dial for the rest of the post. Reading it without the title does show a fairer, more nuanced viewpoint than the title suggests. I still object to the "parent" analogy for the implications of paternalism -- although I'm not a parent myself, so I don't actually know how apt it might be.

Just to answer a few of your critiques.

1)KevinMD renames posts when he places them on his web site. See here for my original title (the doctor-patient relationship can be difficult)

http://jordan-inmyhumbleopinion.blogspot.com/2012/03/doctor-patient-relationship-can-be.html

2)Note that I use the word "sometimes" and also back track to say that I can never know exactly what patients are feeling.

The article is what it is...and obviously many people feel the way you do. I invite you to read some other posts on my blog.

I don't believe the tenor of most of my posts is paternalistic or condescending. But certainly I appreciate your view point.

I am sorry about the reason you are coming back to write.. but I am certainly not sorry about the fact that you are coming back. Because there is certainly something you are good at, and that is writing. I have often gone back to your blog when CrohnStuff was threatening to take too much away from me.. just reading you often made me feel less alone. So, do write. About Duncan, about other things, but please, write!
Greetings and healings
