This story would be funny if it weren’t so sad: United HealthCare for years has been running a database that determines how much providers get paid based on local data for “reasonable and customary” rates. Except United has consistently low-balled its estimates, and let their customers eat the difference. This adds up to hundreds of millions of dollars that United has defrauded from sick people. They’ve now settled a suit against them by the State of New York, but sick people won’t get their money back. Bastards.
