The caste system

In American healthcare, we call those at the bottom of the caste system the Uninsurables. Reading this article on the WSJ health blog, you might conclude Uninsurables are about 15% of the population – but the article is only about people already looking for insurance on the individual market. Many, many people – me, for example – who are already insured through their employers would be uninsurable on the individual market. I’m on record as saying that employer-based insurance is a bad idea, but what McCain is planning to replace it with will create a vast new population of Uninsurables in this country.
